Commander orders end of slavery on U.S. bases in Iraq

The Chicago Tribute reports that the top commander in Iraq, Gen. George Casey, has ordered an end to human trafficking by contractors on U.S. bases in Iraq. His office found that contractors such as Haliburton and KBR use subcontractors that import foreign workers and force them to work by confiscating and withholding their passports. The workers are tricked into service by false promises, and made to work and live in squalor. An estimated 35,000 to 48,000 workers are retained by contractors to perform tasks too menial for military personnel.
