Doctor Who 50th Anniversary planned for 2013

Tonight I learned that there are big things planned for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary.  Steven Moffat says, "It will be huge," and they are considering all sorts of special effects and wonders.  They have a lot of time to consider, though, because the anniversary episode won't be until 2013, with 13 episodes being stretched over 2012 and 2013.

One rumor is that it's going to be a live episode, but that would be hard to do if Matt Smith, who plays the current Doctor and is expected to still be the Doctor in 2013, has his ruthers.  Smith is hoping for it to be shot in 3D, and I'm hoping Comcast will let me see it.  (They still have the standard resolution BBC America and it doesn't look like they'll have the HD channel any time soon.)

Of course, a Doctor Who Anniversary episode is expected have cameos from past Doctors and characters, and while Moffat hasn't confirmed that there will be cameos, he says they're a possibility.  (More like a probability.)  John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack in the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, says he wants to return for the anniversary.  If BBC makes the same deal with Starz that they made with Torchwood: Miracle Day, we would have a good chance of seeing the anniversary episode in the U.S. in HD on Starz and 3D on Starz on Demand.
