Out with the old...

I bought a silver 2003 Subaru Forester today, for about $5700 with taxes and fees.  I'll be picking it up Saturday.  They would only take $200 for my Saturn as a trade-in, but then it was starting to turn into the Car of Dorian Gray anyway.  They wanted to give me only $100 for it, but I haggled them up.  The Forester has about 170,000 miles on it, which is why the price was so low, but it has a lot more features and is in better condition than the Saturn, which was trying to replace itself piece by piece.  I just wish it had waited until after I got the Forester before needing the transmission replaced, instead of two months ago.

By the way, beware CarFAX.  It's not as reliable as it makes itself out to be.  The incidents the Saturn had were not listed on its CarFAX, so if anyone sees a red 1999 Saturn wagon for sale, keep that in mind.

$200 for a running car? That's a crime. The price of scrap has gone up so much you probably coulda got $400 for scrapping it.

For that much I woulda entered it in a demolition derby!

I just found this CarTalk review of the 2003 Forester, and now I'm even happier with my purchase.

It was a bit of strange luck finding the car. I'd been leaning toward Subaru and was told the Forester was the best model to get, but I wasn't seriously looking. Then Monday I decided to see what Cars.com showed in my area, and right there was a Forester for just $5000, with everything I wanted, in Hartford, just put online so I can get it before anyone else. It was too good to pass up.

Congrats on your newer car. Likely they won't be selling the old Saturn, just be crushing it.

Some places though will give you $4000 for your old car if you buy a new one - even after the cash for clunkers.
