Students at a Providence, Rhode Island grade school were told to make hats for when they were to meet their pen pals from another school.  Christan Morales and his mother decided to decorate a camouflage hat with tiny plastic toy soldiers to honor the armed forces.  The school banned the hat because the tiny plastic toy soldiers had tiny plastic toy guns, revealing the terrible secret that the armed forces are armed.

Associated Press article.

We must protect the children from knowing that guns exist, and that our protectors use them to protect us!

After all, guns make loud noises that can wake the sleeping babies and make them cry. And have to explain to their students.

How about wearing a T-Shirt with the Heraldic Eagle from the Great Seal of the United States? Oh noes, that beast carries a bunch of arrows!!!!! >:)

Zero tolerance? The excuse of cowards, who are afraid to take and defend appropriate decisions and want to hide behind the letters of a rule.

Outright banning the hat... maybe a little bit harsh. If you are a school administrator, where are you going to draw the line.

It isn't a secret that the armed forces are armed, but a school is hardly an appropriate place for a gun of any type to be displayed. I suppose your going to tell me that it is OK for the child to swear in class because its so commonplace in the entire armed forces. If those toys on the child's hat are OK, then obviously any other toy that has something of that nature is fine too. Since the hat is clothing we can totally have guns on tshirts and such.

I'd much rather children be LEARNING in school rather than the teachers having to judge matters like this. Zero tolerance is there to protect the school, not create bickering, that is time and money down the tubes. What would you rather your taxes be going towards?
