China finds a use for your sorry butts.

The Chinese can do amazing things with tea.  Researchers at China's Xi'an Jiaotong University's School of Energy and Power Engineering have found that the chemicals in water from soaked butts combine to protect steel from rusting, which is particularly useful for the oil industry.  In a study funded by China National Petroleum Corporation, scientists applied cigarette butt tea to N80 steel, which is used in oil pipes, and it prevented corrosion. An estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are tossed into the environment each year, where their toxins can poison fish, and recycling them can reduce their impact.  One wonders, though, what the exposure to the chemicals would be when used as anticorrosants.
