School sent students home for wearing American flag shirts on May 5.

Officials at the Morgan Hill Unified School District say that the staff at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California exceeded their authority when they sent five students home for wearing American flag bandanas and shirts on May 5, or Cinco de Mayo.  The students were given the choice of removing the bandanas and turning the shirts inside-out to hide the flag, or be suspended, or be sent home.  The students refused to remove the flags, but didn't want to be suspended, so they went home and told their parents, who were outraged.  The Live Oak staff told the students and parents that Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican heritage day and that the flags would be offensive and incendiary to the predominantly Mexican-American student population.  (Isn't "Mexican-American" redundant?)  One student said, "They said we could wear it on any other day... but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."  The district told the school to back down and let the students wear the flagged clothes without punishment.
