Bill Gates goes nuclear with Toshiba.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is partnering with Toshiba to develop a new type of clean nuclear reactor that can run 100 years without refueling or producing emissions.  The Traveling-Wave Reactor uses depleted uranium as fuel.

Toshiba and Gates' company TerraPower, a think-tank on nuclear power, have been developing separate designs for small reactors, and TerraPower decided to exchange information with Toshiba because TerraPower doesn't have Toshiba's experience in building reactors.  (Toshiba owns reactor manufacturer Westinghouse.)

Gates plans to invest billions of his own money in the project.
