Peru police say gangs killing for human fat.

This may end up being nothing more than a tabloid story, but according to the Associated Press, Peruvian police claim they are encountering gangs who kill people to harvest their fat to sell on a cosmetics black market. They say that they have caught gang members with containers of human fat, and suspects have led them to corpses where the fat was gruesomely collected. Supposedly, human fat is sold for $60,000 a gallon for use in cosmetics, although no sales have been documented. Doctors in the U.S. are skeptical that there could be such a demand, because fat is so readily available to them, and is useful only to the patients it comes from because it could cause deadly immunological reactions in anyone else. If gangs really are killing people for fat, they might be believing an urban legend that people are buying it, and becoming an urban legend themselves.
