The Unsung Appendix

It turns out that the appendix may be one of the most important organs in the body.  It had always been thought to be an obsolete evolutionary leftover, but researchers at Duke University believe that it makes sure we have strong immune systems and also replenishes beneficial bacteria that's lost through diarrhea.  They've found that the appendix produces and "trains" white blood cells, and with advances in medicine and immunity giving it less exercise, it can get hyperactive and cause appendicitis, allergies, and autoimmune diseases.  Given that exercising the appendix involves doing things like getting infectious diseases and drinking dirty water, however, I doubt anyone would want to take it for runs.
