Because the bad guys get their guns through illegal channels. So the number of folks who actually get prosecuted who were caught by a background check will continue to be vanishingly small.

The background checks on legal gun owners are bad for the following reasons. They give the people who are in charge of the government some years down the road the ability to change a regulation and block the ordinary citizen from exercising a constitutionally guaranteed right. As Martian Luther King said, "A right delayed is a right denied. " They cost the buyers and sellers of the guns even more hassle, and more opportunity to fill out a form wrong and and become an instant felon. They cost the government an immense amount of money to process all the background checks from all the gun sales around the country. If you extend them to all the gun sales, not just the current gun dealers, figure on tripling the costs, as now the government telephone agents will have to tell the folks who have never done one before or haven't done one in years, taking that much more time for each transaction. That will be paid for with your tax dollars. All it would be is an expensive government program that will give the politicians the opportunity to say during the next election that they did something. That the something is useless and wasteful is irrelevant.
