Looks like Sunnyside Yard to me--probably the nerve centre of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.

Yes that is the Amtrak Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, Queens, which also parks weekday midday layovers for NJ Transit. MTA Long Island Railroad trains also pass the yard during the brief stretch it shares the Northeast corridor and MTA will eventually be tunneling an underjump track beneath the yard to allow LIRR East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal.

Yeah, that's definitely Amtrak. I recognize that red/white/blue paint scheme anywhere.

ferret sighs, used to see that from the #7 subway when I used that route to/from school. The mighty GG1 locomotives were there from the 40s to the 80s. Wave hihi to LK CMSL, he works there!

You were there when I took the picture, on 11/25/2006.

The GG1s, huh? I wonder if that was the locomotive Treg Brown recorded for that "train horn doppler" sound often used on the old Looney Tunes cartoons (a good example of this is in "Hook, Line and Stinker" when a train runs over Wile E. Coyote at a railroad crossing.)
