Couple of things. first, food catered in a hotel costs about double or triple what the exact same thing would cost in a real restaurant. I can go into the economics of why if you want to waste ten minutes of your life, and 20 minutes of my life to write it up, or you can take my word for it. Secondly, those prices sound like the meeting planner paid full list price for the items. If the planner is competent, and there is a viable alternative venue, then the planner negotiated a better deal on another part of the contract. Maybe they knocked 50 bucks per night off the sleeping room rate? So this is not the full story, this is just a teaser to get headlines.

This was later proven to be a charge for a full continental breakfast...but the retraction wasn't printed everywhere. For whatever reason, they just put "muffins" on the slip, even though it covered much more.
