Man flies under own power by flapping.

A University of Toronto engineering student has built the world's first human-powered ornithopter.  Unlike rigid-winged airplanes, ornithopters flap their wings like birds.  Todd Reichert's ornithopter has the wingspan of a 747, and he was able to sustain flight for about 16 flaps.  That might not sound like much, but the Wright brothers started small also.
