I'm going to ask a question over here, instead of at Reddit because I trust you to give me a reasonable answer without the concomitant mockery.

What am I missing here? There have been multiple Spiderman movies, but everyone is going ooh aah as though he had never appeared on the big screen before.

Sony has had an exclusive license to Spider-Man, so the character was unavailable for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes the Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Luke Cage, Defenders, and Guardians of the Galaxy, so far. The agreement with Sony allows Marvel to use a version of Spider-Man for that continuity. (Sony's continuity and Marvel's probably don't fit together.) Licensing is also why Marvel can't use the X-Men without an agreement with Fox or Fox's licensing lapsing, though I've read that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are available to both.

Thanks much, it was like "I've seen lots of spiderman movies, what's the big deal?" I wonder what the Marvel franchise will make of it.
